Greetings to all transitioning service members who have protected and served this country!
On Saturday, January 28th the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University will host the next installment of our F.I.V.E. STAR Transitions one-day symposiums to help veterans transitioning to civilian life in the near and distant future.
During this advanced training program, participants will be given the opportunity to develop skills in how to 1) better navigate the job market, 2) network more effectively 3) master the job interview 4) further develop your confidence to promote yourself as a veteran in any civilian industry.
Hosted by F.I.V.E Star Transitions and the Duke MBA Armed Forces Association (DAFA), this event will feature a combination of technical training sessions with hands-on-tutorials, mock interviews administered by Duke’s MBA candidates, and panel discussions that feature the expertise of hiring managers and previously transitioned veterans.

Schedule of Events
The F.I.V.E. STAR Transitions Symposium at Duke University will be made up of seven sessions to help motivated job seekers successfully navigate today’s job market.
In addition to the scheduled programming during the event, we will also have a professional photographer available throughout the day to take portrait photos. Hunter Rudd, a veteran and incoming Fuqua student, will be taking pictures for symposium participants to use on professional websites such as LinkedIn. His services include coaching and ensuring you are happy with your picture, blemish removal, and full resolution photos.
The schedule for the day is as follows:
- Registration (9:30 – 10:00 AM)
- Session #1 (10:00 – 12:30 PM): Resume building and Art of Telling Your Story - Dr. Jeremy Petranka
Dr. Petranka is the recently appointed Assistant Dean of Fuqua’s Master of Management Studies and Master of Quantitative Management programs. Having earned his PhD in Economics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, his career has included strong advocacy of veterans. We are proud to welcome him to Fuqua and excited for him to share his expertise in crafting your professional story and building a resume that will resonate with potential employers.

- Session #2 (1:30 PM – 2:15 PM): Career Panel

Hear directly from successfully transitioned veterans at the world’s leading companies as they discuss their experience interviewing and hiring veterans. Learn what works and what to avoid, and have your questions answered during our informal, conversational Q&A period.
- Session #4 (2:15 – 3:45 PM): LinkedIn Tutorial (A & B groups switch)
LinkedIn is the most powerful networking tool in the world today. During this session you will experience hands-on training from an expert to learn how to maximize this tool to your advantage during the job search process.
- Session #5 (4:00 – 5:30 PM): Mock Interviews (A & B groups switch)
When it comes to interviewing, there’s no substitute for practice. During this session, you’ll have the opportunity to put into practice the skills you’ve learned throughout the day in a one-on-one mock interview conducted by an experienced Duke University Business School member. Feedback and time for Q&A will be included at the end of each mock interview. An edited copy of your resume will be provided during the event if you register and send a copy of your resume by January 25th.
- Session #7 (5:30 – 5:45 PM): Closing Remarks
- Post Event (5:45 – 6:30 PM) Social Hour (Washington Duke)
